Hey everyone, another great week down! It was a pretty crazy one and I'm dead tired but am continuing to make small steps towards improvement. I'm enjoying this wonderful mission experience even through all the hardships and rejection. I think in my "greenie" mindset I expected everyone to flock towards me and hear the message we have to share but I am coming to a realization that it's a little (lot) different than that. Either way, I love the mission and am thankful for each day to be out here and doing what I love and have grown so passionate about this incredible gospel.

Starting off the week, On Tuesday we had an exchange with the Zone Leaders in Annandale. It's pretty crazy, you only travel north a half hour out of Woodbridge and it feels like you are in a completely different country on the opposite side of the World. Annandale has a very large Korean and Vietnamese population and as we were biking pretty much everyone we talked to was from South Korea, Vietnam, or Mongolia. It's awesome that my mission offers so much diversity and I am truly thankful getting to talk to everyone coming from completely different backgrounds and lifestyles. I guess there used to be a Korean speaking mission in DC South but unfortunately it wasn't very successful so they shut it down a few years ago. Now it is just English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. It was fun being able to go with Elder Mix. He is a super cool guy from North Carolina and is 2 years older than me. He instilled in me some great principles and wisdom and I learned a lot from him. Two things he taught stood out to me BIG time.

1.     If you set too many goals you won't be able to accomplish them. He told me to focus on 1 or 2 small simple goals and that if you master them it will help immensely. He told me about a time on his mission that he was focusing on 12 goals and eventually not even one of them got accomplished. I really liked that and I have already shifted my focus to a simple goal.
2.     Talk to everyone. Not only talk to everyone but share the gospel with them. I think I can work on that big time. I don't have a problem with talking to everyone but I think I can improve and do a much better job of while talking to everyone, centering the conversation on the gospel and the spirit. Even though it is a great thing to get to know who you are talking to, I can do better at sharing the gospel. That's the whole reason I am here is to share the message about Jesus Christ! We ended the night playing some ping pong in the apartment and it was super fun.

So in my group E-mail last week I shared with you all a picture of some text messages from a good ol' basher with some ridiculous questions. We had an appointment with the mysterious text messaging man on Thursday and it was nothing less than a complete disaster. We arrived to the man's house who told us his name was Pastor Santos. He was this little dude from El Salvador who had a giant mouth. Pastor Santos was actually very nice at first and shook our hands and got to know us a little bit. I was thinking, 'Hey this won't be too bad.' Then it went downhill incredibly fast. He told us we couldn't say a prayer with him to open the lesson since we pray to a quote "different Jesus." He intensified and explained his whole purpose for having us over was to prove us wrong and prove that we were liars and complete frauds. On top of that, Pastor Santos had a Spanish book on his table that translated to "50 things wrong with the Book of Mormon." Elder Roper whispered over to me that we needed to get out of there quickly. The first question he had was nowhere near to anything we believe or in our doctrine, so he got on his computer to look up anti Mormon references to supposedly prove that we believe something different.

This guy was a jerk and started yelling at Elder Roper and I claiming we have never read The Bible nor do we believe it to be a word of God. He would look at us and yell liar and then say something bizarre about The Book of Mormon. Elder Roper and I were very offended. Especially me, as I have been studying a lot out of the Bible in Jeremiah recently. Who was this guy to tell us we have never read or prayed about the Bible. Elder Roper had enough of this oompah loompah blasphemist and got up and left the apartment. This guy was still following us out of the apartment and this is when I had to finish him and end it. I recited some of my favorite scriptures from The Bible including Jeremiah 1:5, John 6:38, James 1:5, and Galatians 5:22 (which this man did not have) and I left him with my testimony of The Bible and The Book of Mormon being the word of God. This guy was still following us! I turned to him and asked "Sir have you read The Book of Mormon cover to cover?” He responded with yes I have. So I proceeded to say if that's the case then you can name 3 people or prophets in The Book of Mormon for me, can't you? Pastor Santos said enthusiastically that he could and said, Joseph Smith!.....I told him "sorry but he was not a prophet in The Book of Mormon nor was he alive during that time and the Book of Mormon it isn't about Joseph Smith. I gave him another chance and he didn't say a word and didn't name anyone else. I finished and said, "Sir you are the liar as you have not read a page from The Book of Mormon." It was over, we finally got out of there.

Elder Roper and I were pretty mad for wasting our time with Pastor Santos. As we were biking home a truck pulled over next to us. This guy in the truck said he was a member over in Warrenton and loves missionaries. He hands us a bill and says "Get something nice with this" and drives off. The guy gave us 50 Dollars! What a blessing and we were in shock. It was so awesome and if I ever serve in Warrenton I am finding him and thanking him. The gospel is true!

I am sorry for the long “bashing” letter and story, but I tell you this because I look back at it and think it hilarious. If anything, he's just strengthening my testimony. Here is a man who spends all his time focusing on anti-Mormon material about a book he has never read. Why...? I promise to all of you that The Bible and the Book of Mormon are the words of God. They draw us closer to Jesus Christ. With the Bible, The Book of Mormon works hand in hand and draws us closer to our Savior. I would invite all of you to read and study from The Book of Mormon. Ponder how you feel while reading it and focus on Jesus Christ throughout it all. That was just a funny story and I promise there is so many great experiences and blessings I have seen on the mission. I had a great opportunity to give a talk in church yesterday and I love the ward, area, mission, and gospel. We have been helping an 8 year old get ready for baptism and there is nothing better than this gospel and seeing it light up her eyes. I love all of you and have a great week!

Love,

Elder Junk

Hello everyone! Hope you are doing well. First off, shout-out to Christian for pushing through his 4th Chemo and a shout-out to Jess and Jordan for finding out they are having a boy, that's awesome! It has been another great week here in Woodbridge, Virginia. Days filled with lots of walking and long bike rides. The big hills here really wear you out! I am about ready to retire a nice pair of shoes I got at Ross that have become absolutely destroyed in both of the heels. It's satisfying to see your hard work rub off on something so simple as a pair of shoes. Also, I don't mean to brag or anything, but I think I have become the world's best at no handle bars on the bike. Everyone driving who sees me cruising with no handlebars always give me a nice honk and pays me some respect or maybe it's just because I look ridiculous hahaha. Anyway, another great week has come and gone. Long, tiring, and hard working days equal a short week that has flown by. It's weird it is already P-day again! It came by fast but it seems like it has been quite a while since I last wrote everyone.

First off, I would like to tell you about our investigator Adai who I mentioned in the last e-mail.  He was someone we found knocking. We had the chance to meet with him on Tuesday and let me tell you this guy is super awesome and MAN did he do his research. He had already read from The Book of Mormon and his whole front cover was filled with questions he had written down through his research. He watched some videos on The Mormon Channel on YouTube and then did some online searches regarding our Church. We ended up meeting with him for a little over 2 hours and he wanted to know even more but we had to get to dinner with a ward member and we aren't supposed to stay that long anywhere. Adai is a super nice and intelligent guy and really wants to feel the spirit and know if what he has been studying is true. Please keep him in your prayers that he will be able to continue his search for truth in this wonderful gospel!

As I mentioned earlier, this week we did lots of biking and walking around trying to contact people in the area book. The funny moment of the week was when we were trying to contact someone who had met with the missionaries before. He was walking out of his house and Elder Roper tried to pet his pitbull (easily 3 times my weight) and it went nuts and tried to attack him. Needless to say, we were unable to talk to that man after that. We are meeting with two 8 year old's in the ward and are helping prepare them to be baptized! One is a girl named Charlie and a boy named Aden. It has been great meeting with them and they are both amazing kids. On Thursday we had Zone Conference over at our Stake center.  It's one of my favorite things hearing from President and Sister Huntsman. The biggest thing I got out of zone conference was to be more bold. We watched a great talk from president Uchtdorf and I realized that I still have lots to improve on and can be more bold in sharing the gospel and my testimony to everyone I come in contact with. That's something I really want to improve on, being able to share to with everyone what has brought me so much happiness in my life.

On Saturday, Brother Michaelis from the ward who is easily one of the nicest guys out there, took us to breakfast. Keep in mind he and his wife already fed us dinner on Wednesday. We went to an old classic diner with a little juke box playing classics. Songs like Sittin on the dock of the bay, Stand by me, help, 8 days a week, What a night (December 1963), and My girl. All these different classics playing felt like a tender mercy that I got to hear them. It's crazy how these songs take me back to memories of being at home or at school. The songs specifically reminded me of the Sunday night movies with the family.

As I look back at it now the days seem so long and I'm worn out from it but then the week does go by quick. It's all sorts of weird being a new greenie missionary. I go to sleep at nights and forget I'm even on a mission and it still just doesn't seem real to me. It's a weird feeling. I love the work as a missionary and am so glad to be here serving. There is nothing better I could be doing. I'd invite all of you to find the simple and small things that you are blessed with. I've been focusing a lot on the tender mercies of the Lord and it makes me so happy when I realize  everything I've been blessed with. I'm thankful for all of you and love you so much. I love this mission and the work. Take care and talk to you soon.
Love,
Elder Junk

Random message we received from someone-- we have no idea who.  That was a really funny story.  We ended up texting him back a really good response from everything and now we will be meeting with him on Thursday.  Question 3 made me laugh so hard because that had no relevance to anything at all - ha ha

Another great week has come and gone! It has been kind of a slow one and has felt super long but nonetheless an enjoyable one! I am so happy to be a missionary and I feel as if each week I learn something new and slowly make another step of becoming a better missionary. A lot of plans and events fell through this week. Whether it was people not being home, people not answering the phone, or the day just not going according to plan, we just couldn't get a whole lot of plans to come though. That's always hard for me when we aren't doing much and walk/bike around with no real success or conact with people. It makes me feel as if I haven't been working hard or have been lazy. I just need to realize that as long as I keep doing my best and working hard that even if I am not seeing results it's pretty much all I can do!

I would like to start off with a funny experience that happened this week. We have focused this week on trying to find investigators and have done a lot of tracting and knocking doors. We have also been going through the area book trying to find people missionaries have taught in the past and get back in contact with them. As we were knocking doors and tracting out an area, two very interesting individuals caught my and Elder Roper's attention. The 1st was a man who was wearing an N.W.A. shirt so I complimented him on it and asked him what his favorite song was to start some conversation.  He skipped the compliment and asked if we were selling religion. We explained who we were and that this was all free of charge! He was an interesting fellow and told us that apparently we pray wrong and pray to the Sun God! After no real success there we knocked the very next door. The next door a lady opened up and said she wasn't interested BUT did say to be aware of September 23rd and there was a "reason for all of this happening" I assumed she meant the natural disasters going around the world. Apparently there is a comet going through The Northern Star and she said it was a sign of the World ending and related it to the scripture in Revelations 12. I think differently but Hey, if the world ends on September 23rd let her be the first to tell you, she told you so.

On Tuesday we had the zone kickoff and got to meet everyone in our new combined Annandale/Woodbridge zone. It was a lot of fun! All the new missionaries came in. One of the new missionaries is from Box Elder and we have played a lot of basketball against each other so it was great seeing him and connecting with someone I partially knew. In fact today for P-day with our huge combined zone, we all played basketball at the Stake center. It was a group of about 20 Elders all playing today and we got to reunite the good old rivalry with some competitive games. Anyway, it has been sweet gaining some new Elders in the district. Elder Roper is still the District Leader. There are 3 other companionships in the district besides Elder Roper  and they are all Spanish missionaries.  2 companionships of Elders and a companionship of Hermanas. It's a great district and has been great getting to know the new faces.

After focusing our efforts on finding a new solid investigator, our hard work and prayers were answered on Saturday night. We were tracting doors around our apartment complex and we knocked into a man named Adai. He told us to come in immediately and said that he had seen us around and was interested what we do and what we teach. We answered a lot of his questions and gave him the Book of Mormon to read. He has gone through a lot of different religions throughout the course of his life. Adai grew up Catholic but now considers himself a non believer in God and Christ. He is very willing and open to listening to our message and was very interested with what we teach and what we do as missionaries at such a young age. We have a return appointment with him tomorrow and are really hoping to be able to continue teaching him. Adai has many questions about what this life has to offer and we are happy to teach him!

I love all of you and I appreciate all the prayers and support I really do feel them helping me through each day. Mosiah 16:9 He is the light and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be darkened; yea, and also a life which is endless, that there can be no more death. I am thankful for a loving Savior and for this wonderful opportunity to serve Him for a short period of 2 years. Jesus Christ the Son of God suffered for all of us and truly is the light of The World. I love my Savior and am thankful to be apart of his wonderful creation and be on the earth at this time. Our loving Heavenly Father has a plan for all of Us and that comforts me so much. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Redeemer, amen.

Love you all and take care,
Elder Junk

Hello everyone! I would just like to start off by expressing my love for my area. The Woodbridge 1st area is absolutely amazing and the best area  I could be. I love it here! I love the the ward family, our bishop, and all of the members in the ward. They love reaching out and helping us and have amazing testimonies that have strengthened mine while being out here. I love this mission, and most importantly,  I love my companion Elder Roper! Seriously one of the best guys out there and I am thankful to have him as an amazing trainer who has taken the time to get to know me, taught the importance of working hard, and having fun while doing it! It has been a busy week but I am truly grateful to feel the love, support, and prayers from all of you and everyone in this area! I'm thankful to be here in Woodbridge, Virginia. I even feel the love from the people who aren't interested in the message we share (well most of them)..  Most of the people who aren't interested are very nice and supportive and recognize the missionaries as representatives of Jesus Christ and love what we are doing and our quote "walk with Christ"! I definitely have grown to love all the people out here. I'm thankful to have been called to the Washington DC South mission and it's the best one out there.

This week we had a lot of service and some BIG changes. Service is the key to everyone's heart right? We did service for about 4/7 of the days. Helping people move and setting up this concert/sponsorship event for a Southern Baptist church. We had the opportunity to attend this concert event. The sponsorship was for a special needs program which was pretty sweet! Elder Roper and I set up all the tables, the chairs, and moved a classic car out of the driveway. It ended up pouring rain so everyone from this church was jam packed into a house and unfortunately couldn't be outside! The food there was great and here in the South people know how to cook dang well! One of the members of their church was singing songs and entertaining everyone. The singer sang a lot of country songs as well as some good Eagles songs like "take it easy"  and some Elvis stuff. It is good he didn’t play any John Mellencamp, specifically the song "Cherry Bomb", or I probably would've broken down and cried right then and there for how much I miss listening to his music.

On Thursday we had return and report with all the trainees and trainers. It was great seeing everyone from the MTC specifically the 6 I roomed with and was in a district with! We went around and said what we liked about our trainer which was easy stuff. It was great being with everyone and hearing from President Huntsman.

President bore powerful testimony and shared an experience he had with Ronald A. Rasband. President recalled talking to him one day where Elder Rasband looked president Huntsman in the eyes and said " Some of the best missionaries are in the Washington DC South mission."  President kind of shook it off and just said "yeah right, thanks." But then President described Elder Rasband grabbed him by the collar and looked him in the eyes again and said he was absolutely serious and that he had assigned missionaries to this mission before, so he knows. I thought it was super cool that President shared that experience. I swear I keep getting more and more motivated each day. I hope I can live up to what Elder Rasband said and continue to grow and be the best missionary I can possibly be!  I'm thankful to have President Huntsman as a mission president and I truly do love him. He cares for all of his missionaries so much and is looking out for each and everyone of us and wants us to have success!

As I said, this week was full of some big changes. When I came out to the mission, I came out with 24 new elders. Today 34 new ones come in. Next transfer 27 come in. It's absolutely crazy and I can only imagine the stress on President! He is the man and knows what he is doing though! I'm with Elder Roper for another transfer which is sweet!

It has been a great week and I am truly grateful to be a missionary representing Jesus Christ. He's what this mission and gospel is all about.  I love my savior and I am thankful to wear his name on my tag for 2 years. I bear testimony of the truthfulness of The Book of Mormon and as I read it I have come to love studying the different principles. King Benjamin is one of my favorites and he hammers it home with simple yet powerful words: "keep the commandments" I love all of you and until next week.

Love,
Elder Junk
